How Long Does Fresh Plaster Take to Dry Before Painting?

10 July 2026

One of the most common questions we get after a skimming job is when the walls can be painted. Rushing it is the most frequent cause of patchy paint and peeling, so it is worth getting right.

Let it dry fully first

Fresh plaster needs to dry all the way through, not just on the surface. Depending on the thickness, the room and the time of year, this usually takes several days and sometimes longer for thicker coats. The plaster changes from a dark, patchy brown to an even, pale pink when it is ready.

The mist coat

Once dry, the first coat should be a watered down mist coat rather than neat paint, so it soaks in and bonds properly. After that you can decorate as normal.

We always advise our customers on drying times for their specific job, so you get the best possible finish.
