If you are thinking about rendering the outside of your home, two names come up again and again: silicone render and monocouche. Both give a smart, modern, through-coloured finish, but they suit slightly different situations. Here is how we explain the difference to homeowners across Kent.
Silicone render is a thin-coat system, usually applied over a basecoat and mesh. It is flexible, breathable and water repellent, and it is treated so that dirt and algae wash off in the rain. That makes it a great choice for exposed elevations and for anyone who wants a low-maintenance finish that keeps its colour. It comes in a huge range of colours and grain sizes.
Monocouche is a thicker, one-coat cement-based render with the colour running all the way through. It is tough, hard wearing and very low maintenance, which makes it popular on new builds, extensions and garden walls. It has a slightly more traditional, textured look once scraped back, and it pairs beautifully with ashlar cut detailing.
As a rough guide, silicone tends to win on flexibility, colour range and that self-cleaning quality, while monocouche wins on ruggedness and simplicity. The honest answer is that the right choice depends on your walls, your budget and the look you are after. We are happy to take a look and talk you through the options with no pressure.
